A day in the life of a Allocator

My name's Sam Fraser & I work as an Allocator for River Island.

The education:

I have a variety of qualifications, ranging from an Accountancy AAT to a degree in Drama, however nothing directly linked to merchandising. Through working in store I obtained a good grasp of the fashion industry which inspired me to seek a career within retail at ‘Head Office’ level. In order for me to fulfill my role it is important to thrive in a fast paced environment and to become accustomed to a wide range of new skills within a short period of time.

The job:

I work alongside a group of talented individuals on the ‘Men’s Casual Bottoms’ department. As a team we are dedicated to seeking out and creating the latest trends of the high street as well as developing a product to be proud of. Alongside this it is important for us to ensure our product is suitably matched with the needs of each store to fulfill the requirements of our customers. My role is to support the Merchandising team with accurate distribution of stock, analysis of sales & store selling patterns, whilst maintaining a good level of communication internally & externally e.g. merchandisers, buyers, suppliers and the distribution centre.

The team:

Our team gains its success from innovative and motivated merchandisers and buyers who constantly work in close proximity and maintain strong communicative links. The hierarchy of our team consists of a merchandiser, an assistant merchandiser, a senior allocator and an allocator. We constantly work to sustain a steady progression across all members of our team, developing new skills and contacts along the way. A vital key to our success is that we all share common interests as well as the dedication to reach our goals.

The low down:

It is important to be able to thrive in a fast paced environment as well as be able to learn new skills within a short time period. An allocator must be able to demonstrate secure computer literacy as well as the potential to broaden these skills on various computer software programs. A good mathematical foundation is a strong requirement as data analysis is a day to day occurrence so confidence in this area is paramount. Personally I enjoy taking responsibility for my own workload and prioritizing tasks in order to generate a higher level of sales. I love working in an environment where I am constantly being tested and encouraged to learn new skills.

The advice:

If you want to work in fashion merchandising you must be able to work as a team member alongside having the maturity and initiative to take on challenges and roles individually. You must be confident and enthusiastic about fashion as well as keen to learn about how River Island runs as a successful business. River Island strives to push those who are hard working, dedicated and who have a strong ability in their chosen position.
