The River Island people pledge

We are proud to employ around 8400 colleagues, most of which are based within the UK and the ROI. As a responsible business, we are committed to providing our people with a safe and healthy working environment. We are passionate in our promise to promote personal development, respect, diversity and inclusivity. Exceptional people have made River Island a success for over 70 years and will continue to do so in the years ahead. We consider it our responsibility to ensure our employees enjoy coming to work in a culture that is free from harassment, victimisation and discrimination.

Our Employee Handbooks voice our position as a responsible employer, setting out the standards that we uphold in relation to Recruitment, Benefits, Personal Development, Responsibilities and overall wellbeing. These standards apply across the whole of our operations for all of our employees.

At River Island, we believe it’s our people that make us what we are. A passionate, diverse community of individuals bound together by a real love of fashion. Everyone’s welcome. We celebrate difference and embrace unity; we do not tolerate judgement or discrimination.

Our aim is to be an inclusive employer that proactively supports our people in building an inclusive culture that values diversity and celebrates the cultures, personalities and preferences of our people – who in turn build the success of our business and reflect the customers we serve. We commit to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workplace across all areas of our business. Our approach is underpinned by the Equality Act 2010; we won’t unlawfully discriminate on the grounds of race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, colour, nationality, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, age, disability, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity or political belief/opinions.

River Island proudly partners with Blueprint for All (formerly known as the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust), as part of our commitment to promoting a consciously inclusive business.

With the support of Blueprint for All, River Island will continue to invest in improving recruitment and professional development of diverse talent across all tiers of the business. The intention is to tap into the specialist network that Blueprint For All provides to audit, review and evolve the business' policies and activity around diversity and inclusion. It is crucial that every member of River Island’s workforce is heard, represented, and feels proud to work for a brand that is truly dedicated to unity. A long-term commitment that will resonate with the many communities and cultures that make the brand so special is paramount.

Some of our planned initiatives for 2021 include mandatory unconscious bias training, Leadership programmes for employees in under-represented groups and our largest ever entry-level apprenticeship programme to help improve the diversity and socio-economic diversity within our workforce.

Our Blueprint for All partnership is the next step in our ongoing efforts to support and promote diversity; building on our past campaigns including the award-winning 'Labels are for Clothes' and 'Together' campaigns, from which it is intended to build support and commitment to championing inclusiveness.

“We are delighted to be working with River Island, helping them to navigate the pathway towards creating a truly inclusive workplace. We look forward to working together in pursuit of achieving the goals necessary to enable systemic change, by transforming their systems and processes which will benefit all those within the organisation and every customer they serve.”
