5 Ways to Survive Summer in the City

Are you even British if you don’t moan about the weather? This summer we’ve been blessed with a mini heatwave (that’s right, blessed!) and it’s about to hit maxi territory. With the Met Office predicting scorching weather throughout July we’re getting ready to live our best lives, EVER. Sunshine, football, Jack and Dani’s union – it’s all coming home and we’re here for it. Who cares if you don’t live by the seaside, bring down the heatwave haters with these top solutions for nailing summer in the city…

Find A Lido

For those of you who aren’t on the hype, this urban legend known as ‘the lido’ is an outdoor swimming pool usually found in city locations; no sea, no problem! Why sweat it out in a park when you can alternate tanning with a refreshing dip in cool waters? A quick search of ‘the best local lidos’ will sort you out in no time, but, as Londoners we’re obsessed with the unheated depths at Parliament Hill. Set in a beaut location and with a stainless-steel pool liner offering stunning photo ops, it’s a yes from us.

Urban Beach, Please

Need to feel the sand beneath your feet? Have your beach babe moment without the travel stress and try out an urban beach. Tranquil oases are popping up all over the UK this summer to make your city life just that little bit dreamier. Our favourite is Neverland, the Thames-side retreat in Fulham. As the name suggests it’s a pretty magical affair with Love Island style day beds, cabanas, beach huts and a whole lot of golden sand. From bottomless brunching on Sundays to an events schedule that includes yoga, croquet and prosecco pong – this is a place where dreams really do come true.

Raise the Roof-top Bar

Ok so technically heat rises, but after a day cooped up in the office, we’re all about getting out of the air-con and up above the city to watch the setting sun. Rooftops bars are the perfect alfresco meeting place for after-work chills and if the chat’s dull (yes, we know your stance on communal teabags Sandra), you have a killer view to keep you occupied. Back for its tenth year, Franks Café in Peckham is our jam, what’s more London than getting merry at the top of a multi-story carpark whilst eating mac ‘n’ cheese? And, if you needed further proof of it’s hotspot status, there’s a pink stair case that’s responsible for so many fire Instagram pics.

Float with Films

Save the cinema for a rainy day and take your love of movies outside. Offering screen worthy backdrops for your favourite flicks, there are SO many outdoor film events happening this summer. Because we’ve already done picnics in the park with Tom Cruise, this year what floats our boat is Time Out’s Movies on the River. Throughout June and July, you can go on a sunset cruise of the Thames and when darkness falls, watch an epic movie on the top deck surrounded by stars. Oh, and did we mention they are showing Clueless and Love Actually… DEAD!

Replace Caffeine…

As city dwellers we think nothing of spending £3 a day on our coffee habit. While we could never ditch our barista long-term, we’re definitely keen for a fling with our local ice-cream vendor. Not only does coffee dehydrate you, one of those scrummy iced numbers comes with around 300 calories, so we reckon we’re totally justified in swapping the latte for a luxe ice-cream instead. Grammable and gorgeous, we love the inventive flavours from Shoreditch’s Soft Serve Society. You can still have your matcha hit or relish that urban theme with a charcoal coconut ice.
