Editor’s Picks

Want to dress like a Fashion Editor? Who doesn’t? They are the experts in decoding the need-to-know trends for the seasons ahead. This month, we invited Stylist magazine’s features editor and columnist, Billie Bhatia, to take over the blog and talk us through her top plus size RI picks. Unapologetic, bold and never one to shy away from vibrant print and bright colours, she knows how to dress for guaranteed compliments. Take it away Billie ...

As much as I love the idea of summer dressing – wafting around in cool dresses and shell-themed accessories – the reality of navigating London in the heat renders that idyllic aesthetic void. But Autumn, with its turning leaves and drop in temperature, that’s a season of dressing I can really get behind. Layers (I missed you, layers) consisting of cosy jackets, fine knitwear, dark dramatic dresses, moody winter florals and chunky boots are my happy place and River Island is serving them aplenty. An oversized jumper/rollneck/jacket (delete as appropriate) set against the background of a chilly crisp day and blue skies, there is nothing better.

THE MIDI BLACK DRESS

In my honest opinion, a black midi dress is the most essential piece in your wardrobe. Easy to wear and even easier to dress up, I love the voluminous proportions of this dramatic style. The billowing sleeves add an element of drama to its pared back aesthetic and the midi length allows you to wear it with trainers, boots and heels depending on the occasion. A universal winner.

BIG COLLAR ENERGY

I normally reserve the really feminine side of my wardrobe for the summer months only, but this big collared ditsy print blouse is making me reconsider that notion entirely. With a soft Seventies feel and sophisticated print, this blouse makes me want to get properly dressed – like no elasticated waistband in sight kind of dressed. It’s the nice top your jeans have been waiting for.

SPLIT IT UP

There was a point in my pre-pandemic life where my friends thought I was taking scissors to all my clothes, because I was obsessed with clothing with splits – skirts, shirts and particularly trousers. The cut on this pair is perfect - tailored but relaxed and sporting my all-important split. I paired mine with a casual jacket, however, I would advocate that you wear them with everything. GET COSY

As the colder weather slips in, there is nothing more comforting than an oversized jacket. One that makes you feel like you are being swaddled in a cuddle from a friend. This oversized cream borg jacket does just that. Make this piece the focal point of your look by keeping your outfit as neutral as possible. I went for brown leather trousers and a cream T-shirt - a cappuccino, but make it fashion.
