How to wash and store your most delicate pieces

Party season is upon us and with it all the glitz and glam of sequins, feathers and plush velvet fabrics. As pleasing to the eye as they are, these fancier fabrics can’t always be chucked in the washing machine. A little more thought and care is needed to keep your silks spotless and your feathers fresh. From dry clean only to washing machine hacks, here’s how to wash and store your most delicate party pieces.

Feathers

Plumes are our pick of the party season and here’s how to keep them fresh. First, always read the care guide label. Obvious, we know, but each piece has specific recommendations when it comes to properly cleaning it. If the feathers are on a removable lining then always remove them before washing your [insert fabulous machine washable item here]. The key with feathers is they need to be kept dry - a great excuse to book that Uber. To keep their shape, hang your feather dresses up in a cool and (you guessed it) dry place.

Satin

Keep your satin midi dresses looking (and smelling) their best by turning them inside out before you wash. It goes without saying but keep similar colours together to avoid post-spin heartbreak. No one wants a surprise pink slip dress when they’ve put an ivory one in. If it’s not dirty, wash on 30 but if it needs a good scrub whack the dial up to 40.

Sequins

Though they look delightful, sequins can be tricky to clean. Our advice? Hand wash them every time. You can spot treat stains on your favourite sequin top with a gentle stain remover and dab rather than rub. When it comes to drying your sparkles, lay your items flat and never wring them out. Oh, and don’t you dare think about tumble drying them!

Velvet

As you might’ve guessed, a soft fabric like velvet needs a gentle touch. If you have time, hand wash but if not, check the label and if it’s made mainly from polyester, machine wash at 30. Your velvet suits and dresses will look brand new in no time.
