How to dress for the races

Off to the races? Don’t gamble your way into the style stakes, plan your outfit ahead of time according to the specific enclosure you’re in so that you win big every single time. Stick to the dress code with our collection of smart men’s occasionwear. From slick suits and Oxford shirts down to the finishing touches like polished dress shoes and ties, odds on you cashing in.

THE ROYAL ENCLOSURE

The cream of the crop enclosure, prepare yourself to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. Now’s the time for some serious celeb and royal spotting - if you’re less fussed about the actual race that is! If you’ve got this ticket, pay extra attention to the traditional dress code. Pull out your smartest three-piece suit in either black, grey or navy - creative license isn’t favoured here so save your jazzier suits for upcoming weddings. We’re assuming you don't own a top hat unless you’re an Ascot regular so make sure to buy one that sticks to the black or grey dress code.

THE QUEEN ANNE ENCLOSURE

A touch less formal than the Royal Enclosure but not by much. No need to wear a waistcoat here but a tie is still non-negotiable and don’t even think about swapping suit trousers for chinos. You might not bump into Prince Harry here but you might meet someone who knows someone who knows him so keeping up appearances is still key. Go for a slick black suit, crisp white shirt and boat shoes with socks that cover your ankles.

THE VILLAGE ENCLOSURE

The rules relax a little here. In the people’s enclosure, opt for smart casual attire such as blazer/chino combo. If you’re mainly looking for a good time away from pomp and tradition, the Village Enclosure is for you. From live music and DJs to boutique restaurants, you can stretch your personal style here. A matching suit and tie is the only dress code you need to stick to and the rest is up to you.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Such strict dress codes can feel restrictive and take some of the fun out of dressing up. Play with your accessories to put your own spin on a classic three-piece suit. Whether you choose a printed tie or shiny oxblood dress shoes, there are always ways to push the Ascot style boundaries.
