A guide to Autumn suits

Think you know your suits? Think again. There’s a lot more to it than simply "suiting up" and self-proclaimed suit connoisseur, Carl Thompson, is about to tell you how to freshen up your smarts for Autumn. From different dress code requirements to the key trends in the suit world, Carl is here to get into it all.

"My favourite style right now is wearing a double-breasted blazer over a plain tee, paired with high waisted wide trousers and trainers. A double-breasted blazer is usually saved for very formal occasions however I find that an unlined double-breasted suit paired with more casual pieces can work well at low-key events. Mixing high with lo is a modern take on suiting, one that James Bond (Daniel Craig) does himself, sporting the popular suit and trainer combo at press events regularly."

"Mixing and matching suits is a great way to create a unique style whilst utilising your wardrobe and making an effort to be more sustainable. This double-breasted blazer looks great with so many trousers I own but especially these navy trousers. I’ve been working on a capsule wardrobe and it’s times like this where I really see the benefits of it. Everything goes with everything, meaning I always have an outfit to wear that looks and feels good."

"Knitwear has dominated the smart casual game for the past few years especially when a suit is involved. A roll-neck jumper over a classic dress shirt with your suit over the top is a masterclass in layering with a ‘70s flair. For the ultimate contrast, use knitwear to add colour and print while keeping your suit one block colour."

"For classic formal styling, my top tip is don’t over-accessorise and avoid anything too garish. For example, if you’re wearing a checked or pinstripe suit, keep your tie, shirt, pocket square all plain to prevent any clashing. I love the idea of incorporating seasonal colours into the dress code as we approach Autumn. Think earthy hues like moss green, burnt orange, off-white and camel."
